Rotating Electromagnetic Field for Crack Detection in Railway Tracks

The main problem about a railway analysis is detection of cracks in the structure. If these deficiencies are not controlled at early stages they might cause huge economical problems affecting the rail network (unexpected requisition of spare parts, handling of incident and/or accidents). Within this framework, the early and continuous use of Non Destructive Tests can be useful. In this context, Eddy Current Testing is increasing in importance and popularity.
Particularly, in this paper we exploit the measure of normal component, with respect to the scanned surface, of magneticfield. Whilst the scientific literature proposes a lot of solutions for detecting sub-superficial defects, an open problem is related to the geometrical complexity of the structure and the relevant difficulty of crack detection. In this paper, we propose a Finite Element Method based approach for modelling a fast and accurate evaluation of the defect in railways tracks. The modelled system is strongly versatile and the choice of electrical parameters affect the design of new probes for this kind of inspection. In particular, we propose a solution exploiting a rotating electromagnetic field with very encouraging results: The proposed model is able to recognize deep and surface cracks even if their orientations is vertical to the longitudinal direction of the sensor.

ICT System Architecture for Smart Energy Container (Electronics Project)

Hybrid Energy Resource System (HERS) is studied and applied around world in recent years. Control and monitor of them are quite important in real application. HERS also has the equipment to integral with power grid such as distribution grid networks.
Therefore, to design and implement the information communication system following IEC 61850, which is most promising standard for design of substation communication and automation system, is necessary.
This paper presents the design of Information Communication Technology (ICT) architecture and Unified Modeling Language (UML) models and final implementation through LabVIEW programming for Smart Energy Container. Applying design following IEC61850 series standards allow the HERS can communicate and interoperate with other IEC61850 devices and SCADA systems.
The implementation is applied to SmartEnergy Container which contains wind power, solar power, battery energy storage system, and hydrogen energy storage system. Verification and testing results shows the design is qualified to control and monitor Smart Energy Container.

Design and Implementation of a Wi-Fi Based Home Automation System (Computer/Electronics Project)

his paper presents a design and prototype implementation of new home automation system that uses WiFi technology as a network infrastructure connecting its parts. The proposed system consists oftwo main components; the first part is the server (web server), which presents system core that manages, controls, and monitors users’ home.
Users and system administrator can locally (LAN) or remotely (internet) manage and control system code. Second part is hardware interface module, which provides appropriate interface to sensors and actuator of home automation system.
Unlike most of available home automation system in the market the proposed system is scalable that one server can manage many hardware interface modules as long as it exists on WiFi network coverage. System supports a wide range of home automation devices like power management components, and security components.
The proposed system is better from the scalability and flexibility point of view than the commercially available home automation systems.

Embedded Internet for Pulse Oximeters

n recent years there has been many investigations into sleeping disorders. Many studies are carried out in specially equipped units in which a patient is monitored whilst sleeping. Measurements that are taken are in the form of ECG, EMG, EEG, nasal airflow, and abdominal movement.
Pulse oximetry data is also recorded during the night. Pulse oximetry is the measurement of pulse rate and oxygen saturation of blood. Along with other measurements pulse oximetry data is used in the diagnosis of sleeping disorders. Recent studies have shown that diagnosis of sleeping disorders is better suited to a location of familiarity rather than a hospital situation. Amongst others, this is one of the many reasons that remote monitoring of medical equipment, such as the pulse oximeter, is a forward step in sleep medicine.
In building an “embedded internet for pulse oximeters” a door is opened on the possibility of remote monitoring via the Internet. This solution needs to be inexpensive relative to the cost of a pulse oximeter and the system needs to be robust as it will be portable. Ease of use is yet another major factor when designing such a system. Simplifying the operation of the device allows for less technical operators to adequately use the equipment to full potential.
The proposed system named Oximeter Internet Interface or oi^2, is a web server connected via RS-232 serial interface to a pulse oximeter. The oxinet is able to serve pulse and SpO2 data as well as trend information to the Internet. The medical staff can download trend data and view real time streaming data from any web browser. This is accomplished through the language of the Internet, HTML and java applets.
The design of an Internet based solution can be broken down into two major components, these being the server side and the client side. The server side includes the control and data acquisition from the pulse oximeter and serving this information up to the Internet. The client side includes the retrieval of information from the Internet and displaying that information in a human readable form.
An Internet solution such as this is not a comprehensive finished product but more of a stepping-stone to a fully functional system. The oxinet has been demonstrated at the Mater Children’s Hospital as a proof of concept. The idea was widely supported by staff and this led to more in depth analysis of the feasibility of such a device. It can be concluded that this proof of concept can be extended to a commercially viable product.
